Welcome to our Festival blog

We are a small congregation commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of the village's Elizabethan composer, William Byrd (c.1540 - 1623).

We are planning to erect a permanent memorial to Byrd to mark the quatercentenary since his death, and have begun a fundraising appeal. Our events this year have included a talk on The Life and Times of William Byrd (30 June), including book release; a Commemorative Service of BCP Evensong (2 July); and, welcomed The Stondon Singers who gave a sell-out William Byrd Anniversary Concert on the actual day (4 July). Stondon Massey has also featured on BBC Radio 3's 'Composer of the Week' programme (3-7 July).

This website contains everything you need to know about William Byrd's life and music as well as his links with Stondon Massey. /

BBC FOUR Schedule Byrd Programme for Eve of Festival

BBC FOUR will be televising 'Tallis, Byrd and the Tudors' on the eve of the William Byrd Festival. The programme, which is the third of four parts in Series 1, was first broadcast in April 2008 and features the life and work of two great Elizabethan Essex composers: Thomas Tallis (c1505 - 1585) who was one-time organist at Waltham Abbey, and our William Byrd (c1540 - 1623) originally from Lincoln, then Harlington in Middlesex, and latterly Stondon Massey.

The presenter is Simon Russell-Beale, with The Sixteen directed by Harry Christophers.

This is a fabulous piece of scheduling by the BBC. The programme will, of course, be available on the I Player over the first week of Stondon's William Byrd Festival. This is a happy coincidence!

BBC FOUR. Friday 6 May 2011. 7.30 - 8.30pm.
